WORKSHOPS

Juarez Plaza
SATURDAY

12 - 1
Hispano Traditions
Here in Texas we celebrate the Mexican and Mexican American traditions that dominate the music of our region, but what of their Old World relatives? The traditions of Spain are as diverse as those of the Americas and draw on many influences. This workshop is a glimpse at some of the surprising aspect of Spanish accordion music.

1:30 - 2:30
Osvaldo Ayala
Join us for an up-close and personal interaction with this legend of Panamanian music. He will be joined by members from the Folklore y Ritmos de Panama troupe from Austin, Texas for a demonstration of the dance traditions associated with his music.

3:00 - 4:00
Roma Accordion Convergence, Part I
The 8th International Accordion Festival celebrates the vibrant musical heritage of Eastern European Roma music - especially that associated with the accordion. Serbian accordionists Dragan Mitrovic and Jovica Maric will join accordionists Neshko Neshev (Bulgarian) and Andrei Mihalache (Romanian) in a round robin exchange about Roma music and Roma life.

4:30 - 5:30
Paulino Bernal
Enjoy an intimate opportunity to hear the thoughts and music of a truly great Tejano conjunto pioneer. Having recently released his first recording of secular music in several decades, Bernal discusses and demonstrates his groundbreaking style and his breathtaking virtuosity on the accordion.

SUNDAY

12 - 1
Bask in the Basque
The Basque communities of the American West have preserved a unique legacy of music and dance -- and central to it all is the trikitixa, a Basque-style accordion. Learn more about this community and their distinctive musical and dance traditions.

1:20 - 2:30  Bolivar
Roma Accordion Convergence II, Balkan Jam
This jam will be a musical opportunity to explore what the notion of "Roma music" might actually mean: A shared repertoire? A shared style? A shared identity? Our special guests from Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania will take the lead and the limelight but the music will do the talking.

1:30 - 2:30
Paris of the Heart
Cafés, accordions and Paris have captured the imaginations of many - especially those of musicians who perform in styles such as musette and tango. Both evoke the romance of working class life and embrace a mix of exotic rhythms. These days, 21st century performers have resuscitated 20th century revivals of 19th century music - but the heartbeat is still strong and vital!

3 - 4
Latinology
Scratch the surface of the conjunto repertoire and you discover the international, but especially the pan-Latino, roots of this Texas-bred style. Cumbia and salsa, rumba and redova huapango and merengue have fed into the sound and no two artists are better prepared to share the connections than Sarah Fox and Joel Guzman.

4:30 - 5:30
Cajun and Creole Accordion, Texas-Style
A look at two accordion-driven traditions that are popularly identified with Louisiana, but have long found a home in Texas. They share much, but are exceptional in their own right. This workshop will explore how these musics developed in Texas both together and apart, what they share and what they don't.
