Retoño
Retoño is the latest young group to take the highly competitive South Texas music scene by storm. Just out of the gate and ranging in ages of 15 to 17 the group's first recording Prefiero La Soledad (I Prefer Solitude) was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007. "We didn't believe it at first, we thought it was an error," lead singer and guitarist Samuel Ramos Jr. remarked to a local newspaper. While Los Tigres del Norte, legendary pioneers of the Norteņo genre, took the award as they have in most years, Retoņo returned to their hometown of San Benito, a working-class community known for producing some of the best accordionists in Texas. There they have built a solid fanbase that spans across the state.
A few years older now, the group, which also includes Ramos' brothers Salomon and Pablo and a cousin Armando Ramos Villela, have recorded three more albums, the latest is 2010's Campanitas de Amor (Little Bells of Love). Retoņo's proximity to the US-Mexico border means that their sound is a distinctive mix of Tex-Mex and Norteņo elements featuring the standard accordion, bajo sexto (bass/guitar hybrid), bass and drums line-up, but with more emphasis on dance rhythms (cumbia, huapango, ranchers, waltz), vocals and a solid accordion backbeat. Be ready to dance and to compete with young female fans that follow them everywhere!
